Suspect dead after shooting involving DPS trooper in central Phoenix

The incident happened near 22nd and Jefferson streets, according to police.

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a deadly trooper-involved shooting that happened Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix near 22nd and Jefferson streets.

Capt. Keith Gephart with DPS said the suspect involved in the incident has died. No other injuries occurred.

According to Gephart, the incident began when a trooper encountered a speeding vehicle going 110 mph in the westbound lanes of I-10 near 32nd Street.

Gephart said the trooper attempted to stop the vehicle but it failed to stop and instead led troopers on a chase that eventually ended at 22nd and Jefferson streets after the suspect drove the wrong way on surface streets and traveled through Sky Harbor Circle where troopers attempted a PIT maneuver.

According to Gephart, after the vehicle stopped the man got out and ran. The man pulled out a gun and was followed by troopers, who at some point fired their guns during the altercation.

The suspect, a 56-year-old male, was critically injured and transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased. DPS said it has not been determined if the man was hit by gunfire from troopers or shot himself.

The vehicle the suspect was driving was found to be a stolen vehicle, according to DPS.

The shooting remains under investigation.
