Watch: Driver in Smart car leads DPS on pursuit in West Valley, later taken into custody

The chase happened around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning after the driver fled from officers in a Walmart parking lot.

PHOENIX — A driver is in custody after leading police and DPS troopers on a pursuit that eventually ended on I-10 west.

The chase started around 9:30 a.m. after the Gilbert Police Department says officers were responding to call of a suspicious person in the parking lot of a Walmart.

The man was screaming and yelling in the parking lot and then wouldn't speak with officers. When approached, the man took off, evading officers as he ran several red lights.

DPS began chasing the suspect on I-17, then I-10.

DPS called off the pursuit at one point and Sky 12 retreated as well.

The suspect was later stopped and taken into custody along I-10.

He has been identified as 40-year-old Binh Thien Nguyen. DPS said he faces charges of DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal damage.

Gilbert police will also be filing separate charges based on what happened in their city, DPS said.
