PHOENIX — The family of Lauren Heike, a 29-year-old woman who was killed while hiking in Phoenix, said they were notified by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office that the death penalty would be sought against the man accused of murdering her.
Officials with the MCAO said a notice of intent was filed Friday around 5 p.m.
"Our family supports MCAO's decision and we are grateful for the work of both MCAO and Phoenix PD," a statement from the Heike family, provided by the MCAO, said. "We know that our journey through the criminal justice system is just beginning, but we will be there every step of the way to ensure that Lauren receives justice."
The family just spent their first Christmas without Heike.
"Our hearts continue to break over her life being cut short by the violent actions of another," the statement said. "However, we want Lauren to be remembered for the beautiful and kind person that she was."
Heike was found with 15 stab wounds and torn clothing indicating she was chased over or through a nearby barbed wire fence on a hiking trail near Libby Street and 66th Way on April 29, the Phoenix Police Department said.
Police arrested 22-year-old Zion William Teasley on suspicion of killing Heike almost a week later on May 4. A county grand jury indicted Teasley on one count of first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty.
The Heike family, in Friday's statement, asked for prayers and privacy.
"We have hope and find joy in the knowledge that we will someday be reunited with Lauren."
