Suspect dead after stealing car at gunpoint, shooting at officers, police say

PHOENIX — A suspect is dead after allegedly carjacking a vehicle and shooting at officers, the Phoenix Police Department said.

Officers attempted to arrest 32-year-old Robert Musser at 43rd and Orangewood avenues for a home invasion and robbery incident from two weeks ago, police said. 

Officers said that during the arrest attempt, Musser allegedly stole a rideshare driver's car by kicking them out of it at gunpoint. They were not injured. 

Police followed Musser to Buckeye and trapped him on either side of the road, police said. Musser then allegedly opened fire on officers.

Two officers returned fire hitting the man causing life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Maggie Cox. 

No officers were injured and fire department personnel transported the suspect to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

The investigation is ongoing.
