PHOENIX — Goodyear police said an armed robbery suspect is dead following a shooting involving Goodyear and Buckeye police Thursday afternoon.
Goodyear police said officers were in the process of apprehending the suspect, an adult Hispanic male, for an incident that took place at the Happy Cat Smoke Shop on Jan. 15.
Police said they tracked the suspect to the area of 75th Avenue and Broadway Road. When officers tried to take the suspect into custody with the assistance of the Buckeye Police SWAT team, police said the suspect allegedly fled from officers.
Authorities said police tried to use a pepper ball gun to take the suspect into custody which failed. The suspect once again fled from officers leading to a short pursuit.
Police said officers followed the suspect's vehicle westbound on Southern Avenue toward 75th Avenue and surrounded the vehicle. Authorities said the situation escalated, and the suspect was shot by police.
Video from Sky12 showed multiple law enforcement vehicles, including a SWAT team surrounding the area where the shooting occurred.
Lifesaving measures were performed, but the suspect was pronounced deceased on the scene. Goodyear police said a handgun was recovered on the scene near the suspect.
Police said no officers were injured in the shooting.
Goodyear police said the Glendale Police Department is handling the investigation.

Southern Avenue between 67th Avenue and 75th Avenue, in addition to 75th Avenue between Baseline Road and Southern Avenue, was closed while police worked to clear the scene.
