Tucson man sentenced for 2018 murder of deputy US marshal

The 31-year-old Tucson man was convicted of killing a deputy U.S. marshal, who left behind a wife and four kids.

TUCSON, Ariz. — A Tucson man has been given a lifetime prison sentence after he was found guilty of murdering a deputy U.S. marshal in 2018.

Ryan Schlesinger, 31, was sentenced Monday in court after a federal jury convicted him of second-degree murder of a federal officer, three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer, four counts of assaulting a federal officer and five counts of discharging a firearm during a violent offense.

The crimes occurred on Nov. 29, 2018 after deputies attempted to arrest Schlesinger on a felony warrant for allegedly stalking a sergeant with the Tucson Police Department, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Schlesinger had refused to exit his residence and started firing gunshots at the deputies.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Chase White was shot twice during the incident and later died. He left behind a wife and four children.

Before the deadly event, Schlesinger had been involved in an ongoing dispute with Tucson police that involved multiple threatening emails and an attempt to arrest a police sergeant.

White, 41, was the first deputy U.S. marshal to be killed in the line of duty in Tucson in 66 years.
