PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. — A corrections officer with the Pima County Adult Detention Center has been arrested for reportedly assaulting an inmate in August, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Office.

Initial reports claim that the assault happened on Saturday, Aug. 31 around 10:40 p.m. after an inmate was booked into the jail. After their booking, the inmate "exhibited uncooperative behavior."

During the incident, C.O. Ayden Escarrega struck the inmate several times in the face while they were on the floor, causing "minor injuries," the sheriff's office said.

Robbery and assault detectives responded to the jail to collect evidence and interview witnesses. Escarrega was arrested a few days later on Sept. 4 and is facing an aggravated assault charge.

Escarrega has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
