TUCSON, Ariz. - A U.S. Border Patrol agent in Arizona is in custody after unlawfully acquiring firearms on the behalf of other people, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said.
Ramon Antonio Monreal-Rodriguez, 24, of Vail, was assigned to the Three Points, Ariz. station. Monreal-Rodriguez and another co-defendant were given cash and instructions by a third co-defendant to buy guns from licensed dealers.
Monreal-Rodriguez and his co-defendant would make false statements and give false representations to the dealers and then give the guns to the third co-defendant, according to prosecutors.
Monreal-Rodriguez was a U.S. Border Patrol agent for 10 years and resigned following his arrest.
Prosecution is being handled by an assistant U.S. Attorney in Tucson.
