TEMPE, Ariz. — The Tempe Police Department said officers are investigating an assault at Arizona Mills. Police said there are three outstanding suspects in the assault.
The incident was reported at about 5 p.m. Saturday when multiple 911 calls came in about the assault at the mall, located near Baseline Road and Priest Drive, right off the I-10 freeway.
Police closed off the area around the mall as officers investigated the incident, and everyone was asked to avoid the area.
According to police, the victim is an adult male. He sustained a laceration to his head when he was hit and fell on some furniture.
Police said the victim was within a large group of people at the time of the assault, and the assault involved multiple people who appeared to be teenagers in security footage.
The suspects were last seen running away from the scene, police said.
According to police, the victim was treated by paramedics at the scene and then drove himself to the hospital for further treatment.
Police said they have no reason to believe the victim knew the suspects.
Customers at the mall said they didn't know what was going on and had to run for safety.
Chris Gonzalez said it was scary.
"We were shopping and all of a sudden we hear people yelling and screaming and rushing to the doors and a whole stampede rushing down the hall," said Gonzalez. "So we heard that and got my wife and kids to safe area and we ran outside to take my kids out and rushed back in to get my wife."
This is a developing story; additional details will be added as they become available.
