PHOENIX — Four migrants who are suspected of being involved in an assault on officers with the New York Police Department in what federal officials call a "coordinated attack" were arrested in Phoenix Monday night, Homeland Security officials confirmed to 12News.
The individuals were on their way to the Phoenix Greyhound Bus Station from El Paso, officials said.
"The subjects were believed to be fleeing the state of New York from their suspected involvement in a coordinated assault on multiple New York City Police Department (NYPD) Officers," Yasmeen Pitts O'Keefe, acting deputy press secretary with Homeland Security said.
On Thursday, O'Keefe gave 12News the following update:
“The four noncitizens arrested on Feb. 5 are currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pending adjudication of their immigration cases by the Executive Office for Immigration Review. Efforts are underway to determine if any of these individuals are implicated in the January 27, 2024 attacks against officers of the New York City Police Department.”
Two NYPD officers were injured in the Jan. 27 attack, which happened outside of a migrant shelter in the city.
A law enforcement official told CNN the suspects were given bus tickets by a faith-based organization after being released from jail following the assault.
All four individuals are now in federal custody facing immigration violations, federal officials said.
