PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. — Two men have been arrested in a Pima County animal cruelty case after a neglected horse was found starving in Tucson, according to authorities.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department said Favian Dominguez, 38, and Valentin Dominguez, 38, are both facing animal cruelty charges.

The "severely neglected horse" was discovered on Sept. 19 by detectives with the Arson/Auto Theft Unit who were conducting an unrelated investigation in an area called the "dog patch" near E Valencia Road and S Nogales Road. The detectives realized the horse was "exhibiting signs of severe malnutrition" and in need of urgent intervention.

The sheriff's department's Community Problems Unit was brought in and a search warrant was obtained, allowing investigators "to safely transport the horse to a local rescue, where it will receive the necessary care and rehabilitation."

The animal cruelty investigation is ongoing, the sheriff's department said.
