MESA, Ariz. — Engineers with the City of Mesa visited Crismon Elementary School on Tuesday to assess how well sixth graders can build bridges.
But instead of using cement and rebar, these East Valley students were given glue and popsicle sticks to create a structure that could withstand holding a certain amount of weight.
Students were judged based on the creativity, design and strength of their mini bridges.
The city's conducted this type of education event for several years, in order to introduce Mesa's students to careers in engineering.
"For the students, this is an opportunity to put into practice some of the STEAM concepts they are learning in the classroom while we get to share with a new generation what we love about engineering,” Mesa Engineering Director Beth Huning said in a statement.
