Valley residents can rent a Tesla Cybertruck. Here's how you can take the vehicle for a spin yourself.

Whether you think they are the greatest vehicle ever or as ugly as they are expensive, Tesla Cybertrucks have captured attention on roadways across the U.S.

PHOENIX — Some people say Tesla Cybertrucks are as ugly as they are expensive. And some people say they’re the greatest vehicle ever.

It is only a matter of time before one zips past you looking like a spaceship tried its luck as a pickup truck.

As of April, nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks had been delivered to customers in the United States, including some in Arizona.

For many Valley residents, the $102,235 base price for the Foundation series seems more like a home down payment on four wheels. Not only are the electric trucks expensive, there is a long wait list, too.

But if it’s a drive you crave – getting behind the square wheel of a Cybertruck is now a lot less expensive than you might think.

Need to impress the guests you are picking up at the airport? Surprising your significant other for a special occasion?

You can rent a Cybertruck for just a few hundred dollars.

Turo, the world’s largest peer-to-peer carsharing platform, now features several of Cybertrucks in its rental inventory across the Phoenix metro area. The website connects vehicle owners with drivers who need a rental car and prefer to avoid long lines at the airport.

Kailaa Heaney and her husband are one of several Cybertruck “hosts” in the Valley. They were on a Tesla waiting list for four years. Their Cybertruck arrived in March.

“It was pretty surreal,” Heaney said. “At that point in time I think there were only five or six in Arizona.”

The couple received a lot of attention at first. Drivers scrambled to take selfies of their truck at red lights.

Soon after taking ownership, Heaney and her husband decided to list the Cybertruck on Turo.

“We just wanted a chance for people to experience it for themselves,” Heaney said. “We know that the price range can vary and not everyone has the ability to go purchase one.”

Since joining Turo in March, the couple has rented out the truck 11 times — mostly to people flying into Phoenix for the weekend. Their Cybertruck has also been booked by everyone from wives treating their husbands to adult children surprising their parents.

Turo spokesperson Catherine Mejia said the Cybertruck is a showstopper.

“[Guests] want to make an appearance and this is what these vehicles do,” Meija said. “Turo is the only place you can find it and rent it right now.”

In one Cybertruck host’s description, he writes: “Prepare to feel like a celebrity as people will ask you questions, wave, video and take pictures as you drive down the road or getting out of the Cybertruck at a fancy restaurant.”

Another host writes: “Is it a tank? Is it a Mars rover? Is it a bullet-proof apocalyptic vehicle from the future? Why yes, yes it is all that and more.”

With any rental, especially a six-figure vehicle, there are rules.

Drivers must be at least 25 years old to rent a Cybertruck, and those under 30 are required to book with the minimum or standard protection plan and are charged a fully refundable deposit of $750. Turo knocks $250 off the deposit if guests under 30 enter their personal insurance information.

Off-roading is not allowed and Turo prohibits “durability testing” with bats, bullets and sledgehammers. Yes, that is actually on their website.

Cybertruck owners set their own price and some offer multi-day discounts. One Cybertruck in Paradise Valley goes for $443 per day. One in Tempe is listed for $199 per day with unlimited miles. Heaney and her husband currently rent theirs for $238 per day.

“It’s pretty fast,” Heaney said. “I think zero to 60 in two something seconds.”
