3 things to know about the latest airbag recall

The latest airbag recall could affect millions of vehicles. Here's how to find out if yours is one of them.

Another airbag recall is making headlines this week, because it could affect nearly 2-million vehicles in the U.S. More information is still to come, including the specific cars affected. But here’s what all drivers should know about this latest recall.

1. This time, it’s not from Takata

This new recall has to do with airbags from a company called Continental.

“The wires can short out over time, because of moisture,” said Patrick Olsen, Editor-In-Chief of cars.com. “That can keep the bags from firing when needed or cause them to fire at random.”

2. We know some of the makes and models affected, but not all of them.

This week, automakers released details that some Honda Accords, various Dodge and Chrysler minivans and some vehicles from Mercedes-Benz are impacted by this recall, as detailed in this article by cars.com. But the list of affected vehicles will grow.

3. Automakers need to know how to contact you.

Dealers will replace the defective parts, but it will take time. Expect to be notified by mail if your vehicle is included in this recall.

“The best advice is to make sure your contact information is updated with your car’s registration,” said Olsen. “If you’ve moved or you’ve purchased a used car, the automaker may not have your latest information.”

Otherwise, check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in a couple of weeks. You can enter your VIN to see if your vehicle is affected.
