GILBERT, Ariz. — Gilbert Mayor Brigette Peterson announced Thursday she is ending her reelection campaign to spend more time with her family.

Peterson has been mayor since 2021 and before that was a member of the town council for five years.

"Over the last 24 years, I've served this community as an appointed (volunteer) and elected official and it has been an honor, pleasure and worth the sacrifice of my family time," Peterson said in a statement. "I always knew that I would know, in my heart, when it would be the right time to step away and for many reasons I'm choosing now for this next step."

Peterson said her grandson was born 15 months ago and she is choosing to focus her energy on her family.

Peterson will serve her term, which ends in 11 months. Her full statement is below.

I am so grateful for every step throughout this community, every interaction within this community, every meeting for this community and every smile from this community. It has made the 6 often 7-day work week of 50-75 hours very worth it. The human connections, relationships built and sparkle I see in our community each-and-every day warms my heart as I serve.

Over the last 24 years, I’ve served this community as an appointed (volunteer) and elected official and it has been an honor, pleasure and worth the sacrifice of my family time. Now a new chapter has begun, almost 15 months ago my grandson was born; life is short and I am choosing to focus my energy on my family and so as of now I'm ending my reelection campaign. I always knew that I would know, in my heart, when it would be the right time to step away and for many reasons I'm choosing now for this next step. I have just over 11 months remaining as Mayor and I will continue to give 110% and I am excited to enjoy this last year as I continue to put the business of this town and the residents first!

A very big thank you to this community and all my supporters!
