Salvation Army serves over 5,500 Thanksgiving meals in Phoenix

The Salvation Army has held their Thanksgiving dinner event for more than 20 years.

PHOENIX — The Salvation Army hosted its annual Thanksgiving meal event at the Phoenix Convention Center, serving more than 5,500 meals to community members.

Nearly 800 volunteers helped put the event together.

Food preparation for the event included over 2,000 pounds of turkey, 1,100 pounds of mashed potatoes, 1,100 pounds of stuffing, 75 pounds of vegetables, 95 gallons of gravy, and 6,100 slices of pumpkin pie.

Attendees shared various perspectives on the event.

David Dominguez, one of those served, said he appreciated the love and spirit of the event.

"It's a blessing to have [the Salvation Army] here to serve everybody here," Dominguez said.

Dominguez reflected on the past year and said he and his girlfriend were grateful for family support and their vehicle.

"We're still human even though we are homeless [but] we still have a good spirit to have a good attitude." Dominguez said.

Kenya and her sister Kendra Guzman expressed appreciation for the inclusiveness of the event and noted that their family rarely celebrates Thanksgiving due to financial challenges.

"Our family doesn't have a lot of money and we don't have a lot of time, so I'm really happy that we are here," Kendra Guzman said.

Carlee Rush Davis, a volunteer, said this was her second time volunteering with the Salvation Army and shared she loved to see people smile.

"I've actually been homeless before, so I empathize with the people here," Rush Davis said. "I think more people should volunteer.

Adam Ramirez, a five-year-old volunteer, reflected on the day, too.

"Thanksgiving is all about care."

The Salvation Army said they are preparing for their annual Christmas Dinner and seek volunteers.
