PEORIA, Ariz. — Students at one Peoria high school came together Friday to show support for a teacher and coach who is battling an aggressive form of cancer.
Tyler Hussey, a geometry teacher and soccer coach at Liberty High School, recently had to have a lung removed due to his condition and is receiving radiation treatments. To show their support, many students and staff members shaved their heads right in the gymnasium, which also helped them raise money for cancer patients.
Hussey's cancer battle and the school's support also deeply touched one student who is also battling the disease.
"It's been a giant inspiration," Hayden McQuillan, a Liberty High School junior, said. "It has inspired me and I am going through it."
School administrators said the event taught the students how important it is to have compassion for others.
"This kind of event really shows the kids how much we care about each other and that we, as human beings, need to take care of one another and that we are all in this together," Liberty High School Assistant Principal Jim Byrne said.
Three separate assemblies were held so that all students had a chance to show their support.
