Family-run Sunnyslope eatery closing after 30 years

The family didn't say why they were closing but shared what's next for the bakery's home.

PHOENIX — A family-owned bakery serving scratch-made goods in Sunnyslope for three decades plans to close at the end of March.

"It has been an extraordinary journey filled with the aroma of love and the sweetness of shared moments," a Facebook post from Karl's Quality Bakery reads. "While our ovens may cool, the warmth of our bakery will forever linger in the hearts and taste buds of those we’ve had the honor to serve."

Karl Boerner opened Karl's Quality Bakery in September 1994 after growing up in Germany and training all over the world, the bakery's website says.

"Karl longed to open another small neighborhood bakery where he could return to baking; a place where he could make products from scratch with real ingredients," the website says.

Boerner found a spot in the Sunnyslope neighborhood in north central Phoenix and opened the bakery on the southeast corner of 7th and Dunlap avenues. With his wife, Stephanie, they grew their business and their family.

Eventually, the couple's daughter would take over the family business.

"She grew up around industrial mixers, bread slicers, and ovens and played with cookie dough, eggs, and buttercream," the bakery's website says about daughter Christine Boerner. "And by the time she was twelve she was already helping her dad with small tasks around the bake shop."

Christine Boerner graduated from Sunnyslope High School and then followed in her dad's footsteps traveling the world training to be a pastry chef and confectioner. In 2014, she officially took over and moved the bakery up the street to Central and Dunlap avenues.

The family didn't say why they were closing but shared what's next for the bakery's home.

"After 30 years of baking for our Sunnyslope community, we bid adieu to our beloved shop," the bakery's Facebook post reads. "We are excited to announce that a new local family-owned bakery will be taking over as of April this year."

Karl's Quality Bakery closes for good on March 31.
