SUN CITY, Ariz. — The streets of Sun City will have more autonomous cars on the road, and for the time being, select riders can use the service for free.
The company May Mobility has been safety testing their autonomous cars in Sun City since April.
"Sun city is a great place to operate because there's a lot of people who need help getting around that can't drive or aren't comfortable driving," Edwin Olson, the founder and CEO of May Mobility, said. "We see providing transit as a way to help them live a higher quality of life."
After months of testing the service, the company is expanding operations for more riders to use for free -- with a catch.
Those interested in taking the free car service must first sign up for the May Mobility's early ridership program. After filling out the four questions, May Mobility will then reach out with more information on how you can use their free driverless car service.
Olson said their autonomous car service is similar to ordering an Uber or Lyft.
"There's an app for your phone. The vehicle comes and picks you up where you are and takes you to your destination. It's very straightforward," Olson said. "The big difference is when the vehicle comes, there's nobody in it. When you get in the car and you open up the door, you step inside, you scan a QR code, and that's how the car knows that the right rider is in the right vehicle."
Olson added in the future, they hope to expand the service to more cities in the Phoenix metro area. Right now, May Mobility is being offered in Sun City, and Grand Rapids, MI and Ann Arbor, MI, and Arlington, TX.
May Mobility did not specify how long the service will be free under its early ridership program.
