ELOY, Ariz. — A tortoise recently seen attempting to cross the road on eastbound Interstate 10 at Picacho Peak has been safely returned to his habitat.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to a motorist's 911 call on July 30 involving a tortoise near the freeway. Troopers recognized the "Stitch" label on the animal's shell and contacted Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch, located about three miles away.
Ranch staff confirmed Stitch was one of their resident tortoises who had recently escaped his habitat. The tortoise was taken back uninjured, despite is journey away from home.
