TUCSON, Ariz. — A Tucson-area woman was bitten by a javelina just under a week after the Arizona Game and Fish Department warned people to avoid the animals due to another similar incident nearby.
The bite, which did not break skin, happened on Tuesday south of Tucson in San Xavier Estates.
The woman, 42, was reportedly bitten on the foot when she "tried hazing the javelina away from her dogs," the department said on social media.
AZ Game and Fish recently warned the public that javelinas cannot distinguish between coyotes — which are known to prey on javelinas — and dogs. The department said if you see a javelina while walking your dog you should immediately go the opposite direction.
Officials believe that young javelinas may have been in the area when the bite happened.
