PHOENIX — The upgraded Predator Passage is now open at the Phoenix Zoo.
The exciting expansion opened to the public on Nov. 20 along the zoo's Africa Trail. The Arizona Center for Nature Conservation (ACNC) and the Phoenix Zoo is thrilled about the addition that's been two years in the making.
The 8.5 million dollar, six-acre expansion is the zoo's largest capital campaign project to date. It promises a remarkable and unforgettable experience for guests to encounter awe-inspiring predators.
"This is an up close state of the art exhibit where guests can get closer than ever before to these exotic animals,” said Joaquin Hildag, Phoenix Zoo's marketing and communication coordinator.
The expanded exhibit features African lions, hyenas, a leopard and red river hogs. Meerkats are expected to arrive soon, zoo officials said.
"The Zoo's Rüppell's griffon vultures have already moved into their new habitat at Predator Passage and are adjusting well," Hildag said.
"We are thrilled to welcome these incredible animals to the Phoenix Zoo and Predator Passage," says Phoenix Zoo President and CEO, Bert Castro. "Our goal is to create an immersive experience for our guests, allowing them to connect with these species on a personal level and become inspired and motivated to care for them and their wild counterparts."
