PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. — A K-9 was sent into a commercial yard to locate a suspect, but was killed in the process, authorities said.
Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies from the Rincon District and deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit, were searching for a subject in connection to an armed robbery. The subject was seen entering a commercial yard and a K9, named Kenzo, was sent into the yard to locate the suspect, authorities said.
During the search, Kenzo became unresponsive, prompting the deputies to enter the commercial yard and search the property. The suspect was located and into custody without further issue, authorities said.
But Kenzo was found unresponsive next to the suspect with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but ultimately died due to his injuries, authorities said.
All suspects were apprehended and there is no danger to the public, according to authorities. The investigation led to the arrest of 32-year-old Juan Tacho for armed robbery, aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.
The second suspect originally lied to police about his identity and gave authorities a family member's name. He has since been confirmed to be Cody Bartlett, 36. He was arrested for armed robbery, aggravated robbery and killing/harming a work/service animal. Police expect further charges against Bartlett for lying about his identity.
Authorities said Kenzo has injuries consistent with a stabbing and a necropsy is scheduled to be performed.
“We are saddened by the loss of K9 Kenzo and reminded of the dangers our deputies face along with their k9 partners who serve right beside them,” the Pima County Sheriff’s Office said in a media release.
