PHOENIX — Maricopa County Animal Care and Control has launched a new program named Tails Around Town that will allow shelter dogs to go on field trips with residents.

Residents interested in the program are required to fill out a sign-up form on the county’s website and reserve a time to pick up the assigned dog. The assigned “tailwagger” will be given a backpack filled with supplies for the day and the dog will wear an “adopt me” vest and leash.

The launch has already resulted in at least one dog being adopted by someone who saw them during their field trip, MCACC said.

The program is meant to give the dogs a break from shelter life and to broaden their chances of being adopted while being a dog about town.

“Tailwaggers” can take the dog on a hike, to the park, to a dog-friendly establishment or even back home to cuddle and watch television. Program organizers said the trips help them learn more about the dog and their needs.

The program is currently offered from Thursdays through Saturdays at the west shelter and the dog must be returned a half hour before closing time. There are a limited number of appointments available, but more will be offered once the east shelter opens its new facility in May.
