PHOENIX — Is Bruce Wayne trading Gotham City for the Valley of the Sun?
That may not be true, but a post on X (formerly Twitter) from the National Weather Service in Phoenix is getting a lot of reactions after it said that Phoenix has a bat cave, which came as a surprise to many people.
"The Phoenix weather radar has picked up on the large emergence of bats from the Phoenix Bat Cave this evening, seen as a burst of green radar echoes near SR-51 in the Biltmore area," the post read with a gif showing a large green cloud north of downtown Phoenix.
Many people were surprised to see Phoenix linked to a term that feels more at home in Gotham City, but the National Weather Service is correct. Phoenix does indeed have a bat cave, but no, you won't find Bruce Wayne, Robin, Alfred, the Batmobile or anything else from DC Comics inside.
Instead, you will find a large colony of Mexican free-tailed bats inside.
The Phoenix Bat Cave is located just southwest of the intersection of 40th Street and Stanford Drive, along the Arizona Canal Trail near Phoenix Country Day School.
Each summer, more than 5,000 bats come to a flood-control tunnel in that area as part of their migration to Mexico. The bats sleep in the tunnel during the day and then emerge minutes before sunset to go search for food, which is what the National Weather Service caught on their radar on Saturday.
