TUCSON, Ariz. — Javelinas in southern Arizona have recently attempted getting inside local residences by crawling through entry ways intended for dogs.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department in Tucson said it has recently responded to two similar reports of a javelina trying to get inside residences through a doggy door.
One incident occurred Sunday night after a javelina entered through a home's pet door and caused some property damage before it was coaxed out of the residence.
Another incident reported last month involved a javelina backing out of a doggy door after it got stuck. A video released by Game and Fish shows the javelina walking around with what looks like a small frame wrapped around its body.
The wildlife agency said the javelina was captured, freed and later released. The animals had likely detected a food scent coming from the homes before trying to venture inside, the agency said.
"Dog doors should be kept locked at night or when residents are not home, especially in outlying areas where wildlife is present," the agency said.
Game and Fish has warned Arizonans not to try and attempt to feed javelina. Doing so can lead to property damage and safety issues.
An Arizona woman was recently bitten by a javelina after she fed the animal some food, according to Game and Fish.
