Elderly woman, dog recovering after ‘rare’ coatimundi attack in southern Arizona

An older woman and her dog are recovering after they were attacked by a coatimundi at the Coronado National Memorial.

COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — An older woman and her dog are recovering after they were attacked by a coatimundi at the Coronado National Memorial on Saturday.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department calls the attack a “rare” event. The animal was shot and killed and is being tested for rabies.

The woman and her dog were given rabies shots as a precaution.

Coatis are about the size of a large house cat and range in size between 1 to 2 feet long and have extremely sharp teeth.

The animals are native to the Amazon but can be found in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
