2 coyotes euthanized after reported attack on person, his dog in Scottsdale

Officials with the Arizona Game and Fish Department said they received reports that coyotes in the area were becoming increasingly more aggressive.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Two coyotes were removed from a Scottsdale neighborhood Wednesday after Arizona Game and Fish Department officials received reports of an attack on a person walking his dog.

Officials with the department said they were told by residents that coyotes were becoming increasingly more aggressive toward humans in the area.

A witness to the reported attack told officials a coyote got into a fight with the dog near Thomas and Hayden roads and the owner was nipped by the coyote when he tried to intervene.

This is the first reported attack in the area.

"Coyotes that have attacked or exhibited aggressive behavior toward people are deemed a public safety threat, and the department took action to remove them," department officials said in a statement.

The coyotes were removed and euthanized. Their remains were sent to a lab for rabies testing.

At this time of year, coyotes are caring for young pups, department officials said.

"(They) can exhibit aggressive behavior in defense of dens, especially towards domestic dogs," the statement said.  "Oftentimes, coyote dens are close to communities and populated areas where there is potential for negative interactions.

Officials are asking residents to keep an eye on their surroundings and keep wildlife at a distance.

To report any aggressive coyote behavior in the area, call AZGFD at 623-236-7201. In an emergency, call 911.
