PHOENIX — Educational leaders stress the importance of teaching young children the vital importance veterinarians can play in our community. They say, with more vets retiring and less people getting into the expensive profession, it’s great to have the opportunity to get kids interested in the industry.
That's where Arizona Humane Society comes in to play. The organization offers several summer camp options that educate kids on caring for animals and achieving their dreams of becoming vets.
Shelby Brose is the senior manager of education and outreach. She said the camps coming up this summer leave a lasting impression on kids ages 5-17 and can ultimately be a career choice because of the exposure they get.
"It allows students to come and better connect with science concepts with hands-on learning with the assistance of our teachers," Brose said.
The camp runs Monday-Friday, beginning in June through July. The campers get up close and personal with the animals and the tools they need to treat any kind of animal. The program is now at the new Papago Park facility in Phoenix.
"Not only will they be interacting with our shelter pets but small mammals, reptiles and amphibians," Brose explained.
Plus, because leaders with the Arizona Humane Society know it can be expensive to get interested in the industry, there are programs available to help financially.
"We do provide a select number of scholarships so kids can come to camp, free of charge thanks to our generous donors, plenty more information on our website," Brose added.
