AHS needs to clear 500 shelter kennels in 72 hours.

PHOENIX — After a record-breaking 130 pets came through the doors of the Arizona Humane Society, all pets will have waived adoption fees in an attempt to combat chronic pet overcapacity.

In 72 hours, AHS needs to clear 500 adoption kennels to keep the pace and opted to expand an existing adoption special to include all pets, including puppies, kittens, dogs, cats and critters.

AHS also reopened their Sunnyslope adoption location to help with the overcrowding.

“What seemed unimaginable just six months ago when we moved into our new Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus is now a necessity,” said Dr. Steven Hansen, President and CEO of AHS. “Our overcapacity challenges are persistent and chronic and while we never intended needing to utilize the Sunnyslope Campus for adoption or foster operations again, it was clear this space could still be a vital resource and lifeline for pets in our community who have no place else to go.”

From now until Oct. 6, all pets will have waived adoption fees at all three adoption locations: Sunnyslope, Papago Park and South Mountain.
