PHOENIX — An Arizona dog who was found impaled and disemboweled by a fence in July now has a "furever home" in Buckeye.
AHS' Dispatch Team responded to a call from Phoenix police about a dog that attempted to climb a wire fence and impaled himself doing so in late July. Technicians who arrived at the scene found 2-year-old Shepherd mix Junum with a large laceration to the abdomen with his intestines coming out of his body, AHS said.
"We all held our breaths for this dog because we just were not sure of what the outcome was going to be," Kelsey Dickerson, an AHS spokesperson, said.
Junum had to undergo surgery where AHS veterinarians removed more than five feet of intestines, AHS said.
For more than a month, Junum underwent medical care and supervision at the shelter's ICU, including dental surgery. Despite all of the odds against him, this sweet pup survived and is now living his best life with his "furever" family in Buckeye.
"He is energetic. He is friendly. He is loving," Dickerson said. "We just all were so shocked, so elated, so happy that he survived."
AHS said while Junum's recovery is incredible, his story is not unlike the more than 22,000 sick, injured and abused pets that AHS cares for each year.
"These truly are pets that have nowhere else to go," Dickerson said. "We're set to take in a record amount of pets. We're caring for more pets than we have in the last ten years."
