PHOENIX — Easter is almost here and one Arizona animal shelter is looking for "some bunnies" who are looking to give rabbits new homes.
The Arizona Humane Society Field Team rescued more than 150 rabbits from one hoarding case and had additional rabbits surrendered or rescued since last year. That's why AHS encourages community members to help "some bunny" in need this holiday season.
You might be wondering why an animal shelter is advocating for people to adopt animals and give them as gifts. AHS said in a news release that studies have shown people are "just as committed and attached" to pets they receive as gifts to pets they adopt otherwise.
AHS also offers a "100% Adoption Guarantee," which means if the pet you adopt is not a good fit for your family, you can return the animal within 90 days.
Are you thinking of "hopping" on over to adopt a "fur-ever friend" of your own? Here are some things to consider before you find "some bunny" to love:
- If you are considering adopting a bunny, AHS said rabbits are happiest and safest indoors, in a climate-controlled habitat with a solid floor.
- Out-of-cage indoor exercise is important, but ensure the area is bunny-proof: look out for wires and other items rabbits can chew on.
- Rabbits eat hay, rabbit pellets, fresh, raw vegetables and fruits. Bunny teeth are always growing, so AHS recommends chew sticks and cardboard for your pet to nibble on.
- Bunnies can be litter trained.
- Rabbits have very sensitive backs, which means they may not respond well to being picked up. And you should never pick bunnies up by the ears.
If you're not sure you are ready to adopt, AHS has an opportunity for you to chew on: consider becoming a foster. To learn more, visit the AHS website to take the online orientation and apply.
