PHOENIX — Welcome to Arizona, puppies! Cookie the American pit bull terrier gave birth to the first litter of puppies of 2024 at the Arizona Humane Society on Jan. 8.

The 10 puppies were born at the AHS maternity suites, a special section of AHS for pregnant or nursing dogs to give birth and care for their puppies.

Cookie the dog was rescued by an AHS emergency animal medical technician. Upon examination at the AHS animal trauma hospital, veterinarians discovered she was quite pregnant and admitted her to the maternity suites.

The pups have not been named, as AHS is saving that honor for the foster family, who will take care of the puppies until they are eight weeks old and able to be adopted.

To learn more about how you can foster or adopt animals from AHS, head to the AHS website.
