PHOENIX — Picking out a license plate? Well you're not short on choices in Arizona, especially not after ADOT unveiled three new specialty plate designs. As of Thursday, our number of options is in the triple digits.
With the new Empower, In Loving Memory and State Forty Eight specialty plates, there are 101 unique plates available through ADOT's Motor Vehicles Division (MVD).
101 may seem like a lot, but we don't even crack the top ten for how many specialty plates we offer. That's Maryland with a staggering 989 plates, according to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
But we still have plenty to pick from, and the money goes to a good cause.
“Specialty license plates offer a great way to customize a vehicle and show your proud support for one of these uniquely Arizona organizations,” MVD Director Eric Jorgensen said. “MVD is pleased to offer the various plates that will have an impact for the organizations dedicated to improving Arizona and our communities.”
In Arizona, specialty plates cost $25 per year, with $17 being donated to a designated charity or nonprofit group associated with the plate.

Proceeds from the Empower plate go to the Empower Coalition, a group dedicated to supporting veterans and military families. The In Loving Memory plate supports the youth social services organization, Billy's Place. And if you get the State Forty Eight plate, proceeds will go to the State Forty Eight Foundation, which provides grants and resources to Arizona's small business owners.
