PHOENIX — It's hot in Phoenix, and everyone is looking for a way to escape the sun. Fortunately, nine artists have just been handed $1 million to create shade-providing public art displays throughout the city!
Phoenix will receive a grant of up to $1,000,000 as part of the Public Art Challenge by Bloomberg Philanthropies. The program aims to create art with a purpose and address urgent civic issues.
Phoenix's project, ¡Sombra! will commission nine artists for shading and cooling installations in response to sweltering urban temperatures.
They'll go up through various parks and neighborhoods in need of relief over the next two years, according to a release from the organization.
Out of 150 applicants across 40 states, Phoenix was one of eight winners.
