PHOENIX —
Name:
Tinkahontas
How did you get started in the art or music world?
I have always loved music. I took piano lessons as a child and have always had an inclination to play by ear. Music has always been a way to express myself and channel my pain into art.
During COVID-19, I had the opportunity to take professional voice lessons from an XFactor coach and learned a lot about my vocal range and love for singing. I currently sing as a freestyle vocal artist and love to create art that strums your heartstrings!
How would you describe yourself as an artist?
I am a vocal freestyle artist and most of the time I don't write my music, it just formulates itself into songs. Wolves is my only work so far that as a collaboration we put the song together as an intentional collaborative project.
I feel like my music is channeling and very intuitive. Most of the songs are one takes and I just seem to be able to translate my emotions and ideas into cohesive messages through ethereal vocals and bass tracks. I am learning how to play guitar and recently realized that my natural playing style is upside-down and backward like Jimi was.
As an artist, I am constantly evolving and morphing into new layers of my self-expression.
What is your favorite medium?
As an artist, words are my favorite medium. I am a writer by Divine assignment and feel that the books, poetry, and songs that I offer to the world are a magical well of inspiration and positivity. I am an educator and coach and believe in the power of belief and our Sovereignty in the power of our words, they create our reality.
What motivates you to create?
Self-expression motivates me to create, it supports my mental health. For me to be able to express myself and formulate my emotions, challenges, and life plot into exciting art forms and transmute the power into magic, brings me hope! Adulting is only hard and life is only confusing, so I love to make a game out of rewriting my own story through creativity!
What was the inspiration behind the piece selected to be featured as an ArtPop?
The song, “Wolves,” was a studio collaboration between me, Blake Mathews, and Mercury Sterling as an assignment for a Songwriting course we were all taking together in 2022. The course was created by Ryan Tedder from One Republic and included 3 songwriting assignments, the 3rd being a collab project.
The guys asked me to sing so we took a road trip to our family cabin in Telluride, CO to create a remote studio retreat and created the song together in the mountains. We wrote the lyrics, recorded the live samples, and produced the song in 3 days.
The name was inspired by a lone wolf we witnessed on the road driving into the town. It symbolizes a spirit of courage and a call to action to take an active role in your life experience and truly create a legacy of your own design! Venturing into the unknown and acting in courage and valor is what will cause your soul to feel free!
