ArtPops: Q & A with musician Monique Delphin

Songwriting has always been her gift and passion. She comes from a musical family so her dad has always encouraged her to find her voice musically.

PHOENIX —

Name:

Monique Delphin

How did you get started in the art or music world?

I began writing songs at 8 years old and cut my first demo called “Take it Slow (I’m Only 15)” when I was 15 years old. It’s always been my gift and passion. I also come from a musical family so my dad has always encouraged me to find my voice musically. The two of us are still collaborating on new songs.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

I am a storyteller at heart. Growing up I listened to country music and connected with the storytelling of a song. As a singer/songwriter, I look to do the same. There’s a beginning and an end and then you have the middle. You have to take the listener on a journey with you.

What is your favorite medium?

I like to listen to podcasts on YouTube and I watch a lot of documentaries on musicians and the music business as a whole.

What motivates you to create?

I know that my gift of singing and songwriting comes from God, so my faith is a huge motivating factor.

But another factor is “life.” My songs deal with situations I’ve gone through or situations others have gone through. I can be motivated by almost anything, anyone, and any situation honestly. I jokingly tell my family that I can make a song out of anything.

What was the inspiration behind the piece selected to be featured as an ArtPop?

I used to live in Atlanta and I was waiting for the train at the MARTA station, and it just came to me. I began to think about what people thought made them happy like money, fame, marriage, etc. It forced me to ask the question, “What is it that we are searching for?” For me, the answer lies in my faith in God.

How can people find you?

In person, I can be found at Dove of the Desert United Methodist Church in Glendale, leading praise and worship at the 9:30 am Contemporary Christian service.

Virtually/Socially I can be found on the websites below:
