ArtPops: Q & A with Dusty Rug

PHOENIX —

Name:

Dusty Rug

How did you get started in the art or music world?

All of us have been playing music since we were young but none of us seriously pursued it until we met each other and formed Dusty Rug. We started by playing small gigs around Flagstaff; after establishing ourselves locally we were able to start playing in different cities and on bigger stages. We recorded our first album within a year of being a band and our second one is scheduled for release in early 2024.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

Music as a medium dictates us artistically–we have to not only create but also perform and work with each other to function as one. At the heart of everything we all just want to play our music.

What is your favorite medium?

Live performance itself is our favorite medium. The intimacy and ephemerality of every performance offer a unique musical experience for both us and the audience. No two shows are the same.

What motivates you to create?

We all have a deep love and appreciation for music which naturally drives us to create it. It is one of the few things that we genuinely find meaningful.

What was the inspiration behind the piece selected to be featured as an ArtPop?

“Pending Past Mending” in its essence is about rocky relationships and uncertainty. We stumbled upon the guitar riff by accident and it became the driving force behind the entire song. After the basic structure was in place we all added our respective parts and it turned into the song it is today.

How can people find you?

People can listen to our recorded music on all streaming platforms. For information regarding upcoming shows and all other Dusty Rug-related things, find us on Instagram and other social media @dustyrugband.
