PHOENIX - According to Phoenix PD, a 28-year-old man is dead after crashing a truck into a construction zone on Dobbins Road and hitting a Caterpillar excavator.

A 26-year-old passenger was hurt, but his injuries are non-life threatening.

Phoenix PD says just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a 2000 Chevy pickup truck drove around the road closure barricades at 59th Avenue and Dobbins Road, entering the construction site and proceeding on Dobbins.

While using the construction zone as a cut-through, the Chevy truck hit a parked Caterpillar excavator. The truck left the roadway until coming to rest in the dry canal on the south side of Dobbins Rd.

The passenger was ejected from the truck, but was able to walk to a home nearby and ask for help.

The driver was pronounced dead on scene and has been identified as Gregory James.

Phoenix PD says the investigation is ongoing and believes impairment could have been a factor in the crash.
