Temps could drop into upper 20s overnight in parts of Pinal, Pima counties; freeze warning in effect

These conditions will kill sensitive vegetations and could damage unprotected plumbing, the National Weather Service said.

TUCSON, Ariz. — A freeze warning will take effect for parts of Pinal and Pima counties at 3 a.m. as temperatures dip into the low 30s, with a few locations possible getting down into the upper 20s.

The warning will expire at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

These conditions will kill sensitive vegetations and could damage unprotected plumbing, the National Weather Service said.

Protect pipes, pets and plants

To prevent frozen pipes and the possibility of a pipe bursting, they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly. In-ground sprinkler systems should be drained and above-ground pipes should be protected from the elements.

Pets should be brought inside. Fur only does so much to insulate an animal, and it's almost always going to be best to have them inside where it's warm.

Remember the saying: If you're cold, they're cold.

There are also a few things you can do to prevent sensitive plants from dying in the weather:

  • Cover your plants, either with a freeze cloth or cold frame. Or, you can cover them with blankets, bed sheets, and even buckets if the plant is small.
  • Water the soil (not the plant leaves) before the freeze.
  • Bring lights outside or outdoor heaters for extra warmth.
  • Consider bringing plants indoors.
