MESA, Ariz. — One person is dead after a head-on crash involving a vehicle with small children near Sossaman and Baseline roads on Friday.
A full-sized truck rolled over in the crash, according to the Mesa Police Department. One adult and three small children were in the truck and were transported to a local trauma center. One child is in serious condition, police said.
When officers arrived at the scene Friday, the found a Ford truck flipped over and a Toyota Prius with extensive damage. The driver of the Prius was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck had a 39-year-old male drier. and three children from 5 years to 2 months old.
The driver was seriously injured and is in intensive care. Two of the children have been hospitalized, one with serious injuries, police said.
Mesa police said that truck was southbound on Superstition Spring Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it attempted to pass a vehicle in front of it by going left of center into a two-way left turn lane. The Prius was southbound on Sossaman and was in the turn lane to go westbound on Superstition Springs. The two vehicles collided head on.
The driver of the other vehicle died at the scene, police said. Sossaman Road remains closed in both directions as police investigate.
