PHOENIX — All year long on Friday Night Fever, Arizona's No. 1 and longest-running high school football show, we have been asking you, the fans, to help us out by voting for the top play of the week, which was called the Sweet Play of the Week.
After the regular season, the 11 weekly winners then advanced to a second round of voting to see which play would become the Sweet Play of the Year, with the player who made the play winning a $5,000 scholarship, courtesy of Sweet James Accident Attorneys.
Now, it is time to reveal the play that won after a total of 1,161,468 votes were cast.
Congratulations to Higley High School's Ezy Brown! His interception that sealed Higley's 15-12 win over Desert Mountain in Week 10 was voted the Sweet Play of the Year after receiving 307,770 votes!
Brown told 12Sports journalist Cameron Cox this could not have been done without the support of his community who rallied around him while the Sweet Play of the Year poll was open.
"First and foremost, I would like to thank God, and I would like to thank my family, of course, and I would like to thank my coaches, Coach (Eddy) Zubey, of course, Higley High School and then, most importantly, my teammates, because they went crazy, like the support was crazy, and it means everything to me to win because I was just put in the opportunity and I feel like it was just God's opportunity at the end of the day."
Brown described what happened leading up to his interception and said he made the play because he noticed a Desert Mountain wide receiver wasn't being covered.
"We were supposed to be in man, that wasn't my guy, that was supposed to be the safety's man, but I took him and, like coach says, if you're going to make a shot, you've got to take the full bullet, so I took the chance and I got the, I made the play."
Brown, who was emotional while receiving the $5,000 check, said this moment meant a lot to him because of how it will help his family.
"This is going to help me a lot to pursue my athletic and academic career, to go to college, but most of all help my family not pay for college as much and benefit them, which is just a God-given thing and I really appreciate it so much."
