PHOENIX — Former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake has thrown his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris's presidential campaign.
Flake, a Republican, announced on Sunday that he was endorsing Harris for president and Gov. Tim Walz for vice president.
"I’ve served with Kamala in the U.S Senate. I’ve also served with Tim in the House of Representatives," Flake said on X (formerly Twitter). "I know them. I know first of hand of their fine character and love of country."
Flake isn't the first Republican to endorse Harris as a growing list of Arizona Republicans have signed onto an alliance supporting her campaign. The Arizona Republicans for Harris Advisory Committee announced earlier this month they have 120 members.
"I believe that we don't have to agree on every issue or policy, but that we should use the political process created by our Founders to debate and persuade, not disparage and demonize," Flake said as part of a larger statement.
"I want to support a Presidential candidate who understands and appreciates the difference."
Flake has long criticized former president Donald Trump. In 2021, he admonished his own party for not convicting Trump following the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol and encouraged fellow Republicans to "move on" from Trump.
The endorsement comes soon after Harris's visit to the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday.
Flake served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013 and represented Arizona in the U.S. Senate from 2013 to 2019. He was succeeded by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema.
