PHOENIX — Rescue efforts on a South Mountain trail have turned into recovery efforts, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Rescue crews were originally called to assist someone on the trail around 8:20 a.m. Saturday.
Before fire crews could reach the person, police officers determined they were dead.
Officers were initially called to the area of the National Trail around 8 a.m. for reports of a person injured in the area, according to Phoenix police.
When officers arrived they found the person dead. Detectives are on their way to the scene to take over the death investigation.
The cause of death is pending an autopsy.
