MESA, Ariz. — Due to COVID-19 shutdowns, many seniors are missing out on some of the memories that come with those final moments of high school. Two Valley families found a way to still give their children a special experience.
Skyline quarterback Blake Roebuck won’t get to attend his senior prom. His mom Renee, girlfriend Alexia who’s a freshman at the University of Arizona, and her parents Pam and Brian, pitched in to give him a memorable night instead.
Blake unexpectedly showed up to ‘backyard prom’ at the Fowler’s house on Saturday. Blake was told to dress in a tux, while Alexia wore her prom dress. Steak dinner was served, and dancing ensued.
“I think just being able to give him somewhat of the opportunity to have a little bit of that senior experience, especially something that I got to have; I didn’t want him to be left out of anything,” said Alexia.
“This is really a big surprise and it’s beautiful, honestly,” said Blake. “I’m going to remember this for the rest of my life for sure that all the people around me that love me, that they made sure I got an experience.”
The original idea came from Blake’s mom, Renee, who not only wanted to provide her son with memories but show other parents of seniors that it’s possible to make the best of the situation.
“We have no control over what happens, but we have every opportunity that we can do other things to make things happy,” said Renee. “I encourage any senior parents to go outside the box and think about other things that you can do to make memories because we don’t get these times back.”
