Officers shot an armed man in Mesa Wednesday afternoon after he violated an order of protection against his estranged wife, police said.
A Mesa Police Department spokesperson said the man fired at officers first before one officer returned fire and shot him at a Circle K near Greenfield and Baseline roads.
The man was rushed to the hospital in serious condition, where he later died. He has since been identified as 30-year-old Kevin Baldwin.
No officers were injured in the shooting, the spokesperson said.
Police said the Baldwin had threatened his wife, so undercover officers began following him. He stopped at the Circle K, where officers contacted him andtried to make an arrest.
Police said the suspect briefly ran through the parking lot before he reached for his handgun in his waistband and pulled it out.
During the encounter, police say one officer deployed a stun gun that was not effective.
Police said Baldwin fired at least two bullets from his handgun as a second officer returned fire, hitting the suspect and ending the confrontation.
