Charges dropped against man punched by officers at Mesa apartment complex

He had been charged with disorderly conduct and hindering prosecution.

MESA, Ariz. - The charges against a man who was seen on video being beaten by Mesa police officers have been dropped.

Robert Lee Johnson, who was arrested May 23, was unarmed. He was charged with disorderly conduct and hindering prosecution before the Mesa City Court granted the city prosecutor's motion to dismiss those charges.

The Mesa officers were responding to a domestic violence call at the time of the incident. Johnson was a friend of the suspect.

Johnson’s attorney, Benjamin Taylor says his focus has turned to seeing that the officers involved face disciplinary action in the department.

The dismissal comes a day after a video was released showing Mesa police officers mocking a man as he lay in the hospital.

The Mesa Police Department also released a statement about that video on Thursday, saying they are investigating the incident.
