LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — A small number of Wildlife World Zoo animals have likely fallen ill with avian flu, resulting in the zoo implementing increased safety precautions.

"While we are deeply saddened to report the loss of a few cherished animals, we are grateful that the impact was limited thanks to our swift response, robust biosecurity protocols, and the invaluable support of Maricopa County Department of Public Health and state and federal agencies,” Kristy Hayden, president of Wildlife World Zoo, said in a statement.
The zoo has temporarily halted guest activities involving direct contact with animals. The facility will also be disinfecting enclosures and restricting access to affected areas.
The avian flu primarily affects birds and has recently been detected at a poultry farm in Pinal County. Human infections are considered rare, the health department said.
