PHOENIX - "Avengers: Infinity War" had the biggest opening in movie history over the weekend with millions of people going to the movie theater.
But they also brought their germs ... and 12 News brought the Filth Finder to see how dirty those theaters really are.
Remember, the Filth Finder tests for biological material like skin cells, bacteria, anything that's living. A score of 30 and below is safe, 30 and above is considered dirty.
First up, we tested the theater ticket kiosk, the touchscreen outside the building that lets you pick up your tickets without waiting in line. The glass touchscreen came in at 92, three times the limit, and we weren't even through the door.
Next we headed to the bathroom. We're not testing the toilets or the sinks, but the soap dispensers — the thing you touch to get yourself clean after the bathroom. We swabbed the handle and tested it in the Filth Finder. Final result: 60, double the limit.
"Hopefully you're in the process or washing your hands right after you touch that," physician Dr. Andrew Carroll said. "You wouldn't touch the back of it and then just leave the bathroom."
Once we finally made it to the theater seats, we checked out the armrests. After all, everyone's arm has been on it, and who knows how thoroughly it's been cleaned?
The armrest came in at 135. Remember, "clean" is 30. And we were in the matinee, the first showing of the day.
The biggest shock came when we swabbed the floors. Theater floors have a reputation for being sticky and disgusting. But in the first showing of the day, the floor registered at only 1. That's technically clean enough to eat off of. We ran the test twice just to make sure.
"I think probably overnight the janitorial crew is giving it a very good clean," Dr. Carroll said. "Maybe that's a good argument for going to the matinee showing."
Of course the theaters get cleaned throughout the day, but Carroll said it's probably safe to assume that all of these surfaces could get dirtier as the day goes on.
