The Phoenix City Council, along with Mayor Greg Stanton, voted unanimously to add rainbow-painted crosswalks at two Phoenix intersections.

Phoenix will paint the crosswalks as a show of support for and "symbol of inclusivity" for the LGBTQ community.

According to a release from the city, the Central Avenue crossing at Portland Street and the 7th Avenue crossing at Glenrosa Avenue will be painted.

“Phoenix values and embraces its LGBTQ brothers and sisters,” Stanton said in a release. “Phoenix is committed to ensuring equal treatment and rights for everyone and showing our support because we know diversity makes us stronger.”

Three of the largest organizations that serve LGBTQ individuals, including Phoenix Pride Community Foundation and one-n-ten, requested that the rainbow crosswalks be installed in Phoenix, according to a release.

The city said the groups have offered to cover the costs to install and maintain the painted crosswalks.
